New Construction or General Remodel: How to Choose What’s Right for You

And not to mention, there’s no patio to enjoy the beautiful Southern California weather.  If these are the types of thoughts you’ve been having recently, then you e might’ve started wondering if a new construction home or a general remodel is in order. Both are major decisions that can help you achieve your goals, but there’s a lot to consider with each. Let’s break down the choices in this post. 

Factor in Location

If you love where you live now, then a remodel is probably the obvious choice. Depending on your lot size, you might even be able to build a room addition or an ADU if you need more space in the future. However, it’s important to think about your home’s location in terms of your future needs. For example, is your current home in your preferred school district if you plan on expanding your family? Is your home close to public transportation and important destinations such as hospitals for when you begin aging and your needs and abilities change.

Consider Your Goals

The major benefit of a general remodel over a less substantial renovation is that, with a remodel, you can alter the layout of your home quite significantly. By knocking down walls, moving plumbing, and even creating brand new rooms, you have a lot more freedom to redesign your home the way you want it.  If you’re looking for a completely fresh start, then a new construction home is the way to go. Obviously, you have the ability to customize nearly every aspect of your new home when you build it from scratch, which may be the more attractive option if you don’t want to face as many restrictions on executing your vision. However, be advised that a new construction home will take substantially more time and effort to complete than a general remodel.

Keep Your Budget in Mind

Of course, a new construction home is going to be significantly more expensive than a general remodel. Costs can range anywhere from $400 to $800 per square foot depending on a number of factors. However, the upside is you get a house that’s fully customized to you. Additionally with a remodel, you’re able to control costs more tightly and you’ll likely have to account for fewer contingencies since it’s a smaller scale project.  While cost is a factor, remember that you have several ways to finance either option. You can do a new construction home loan or pull existing equity of your home to finance a remodel.
